How VIS Helps Insure Volunteers

Established in 1972, Volunteers Insurance Service Association, Inc. (VIS) is the U.S.A.’s leading provider of insurance and risk management services for volunteer-based organizations. We also have partnered with best-in-class providers of other products and services nonprofit organizations need, to offer our members substantial cost-saving opportunities.

Do Volunteers Need Insurance?
Volunteers are valuable contributors, giving freely of their time and skills to help the organization fulfill its mission. VIS has developed a unique program that allows organizations to insure volunteers separately, rather than include them on the commercial liability policies that provide coverage for the organization and its employees. By doing so, organizations can protect their liability limits and claims experience, close  coverage gaps that typically exist on organizational liability policies, and provide volunteers a valuable benefit that helps with recruitment and retention.

With the VIS insurance program, an organization can protect its volunteers in case they are injured, accidentally injure someone else or damage someone’s property, or are at fault in a vehicle accident while on a volunteer assignment.

Three Kinds of Insurance Coverage for Volunteers
The VIS volunteer insurance program features three kinds of coverage; these coverages may be obtained separately or in any combination:

Accident Medical – at a rate of $4.25 per volunteer per year, this policy provides up to $50,000 if a volunteer is injured.

Volunteer Liability – at a rate of $2.05 per volunteer per year, this policy provides up to $1 million in liability coverage if a volunteer is responsible for personal injury, bodily injury, or property damage. The VIS policy also provides legal defense if a volunteer is accused of sexual misconduct.

Excess Automobile Liability – at $7.45 per volunteer per year, this policy provides up to $500,000 if a volunteer is at fault in a vehicle accident and the liability limits on his or her personal auto insurance policy are insufficient for the damage done.

For each kind of volunteer insurance coverage, a $100 minimum premium applies. To calculate how much insurance you need, simply estimate the greatest number of volunteers who would be active at any given time. Your exact cost is calculated automatically on the online application. Or if you prefer, your local insurance agent can place the coverage on your behalf. Either way, your cost is the same.
